Framework laptop board repair
Framework is the laptop that argues against this entire industry. Modular, repairable, with mainboards you can buy off the shelf. So why does a board bench have a Framework page? Because component-level repair still wins in three situations: the board is out of warranty and the fault is one small part, the machine has taken liquid that only the bench can clean, or the data conversation makes a repair the only way forward. This page is honest about when Framework's own spare-part model is the better answer.

When board repair beats a board swap
- Single-component faults: one dead power stage or charging circuit does not justify a whole mainboard, when it can be fixed for the fixed repair price
- Liquid damage: cleaning and component-level recovery, where a replacement swaps the symptom and keeps the problem (and the cost)
- Legacy or discontinued boards: when the compatible mainboard is no longer sold, repair is the only route left
- Data-priority cases: keeping the original board and its storage relationships matters most
When the fault is genuinely beyond component work, or the customer simply wants the newer mainboard generation, we will say so. With the diagnosis and photos behind the opinion.
What to check before you post it
The Framework's modules make triage easier than most: swap the confirmed-good expansion card and charger first, then run the charging triage or the no-power triage as the symptom dictates. If the machine powers but cannot see its storage (the module you can test first) the storage triage applies.
Framework questions
Isn't Framework supposed to be repairable?
It is, and that helps: modules make triage easy. Component-level repair wins in three specific cases: out-of-warranty single faults, liquid damage that needs proper cleaning, and discontinued boards. Where a replacement mainboard is genuinely the better answer, the diagnosis says so.
What if the customer just wants a new mainboard generation?
Then Framework's own upgrade path is the right call. This bench is for the cases where it is not, and the diagnosis tells the difference with photos.
What about liquid damage on a Framework?
A cleaning and component-level recovery job, and a case where replacement keeps the problem (and the cost) while a repair removes it. The first-hour rule still applies: power off, stop charging.
How much does the repair cost?
£120 + VAT fixed (post both ways and a 12-month warranty included) or £180 + VAT in the priority slot. Diagnosis is £35 + VAT and is waived when the repair goes ahead.
