Gaming laptop won't turn on: the no-power triage

A gaming laptop with no signs of life (no fans, no lights, nothing on the charger) is usually a power-path fault: the jack, the charging circuit, the power rails, or the board's own startup logic. It is rarely the "the whole machine is dead" verdict the customer has already been given. Here is the triage that says which job you are quoting.

Five checks before the bench

  1. Known-good charger with the right wattage. Underpowered adapters and frayed barrel cables do the obvious thing.
  2. Watch the charge LED. No LED on a plugged-in machine is information: the power path is broken before or at the board.
  3. An EC reset. Most gaming machines have a hard-reset sequence (hold power 20–30 seconds, or a pinhole button). If it revives, you know it is firmware-adjacent, not a dead GPU.
  4. Feel for fan twitch or keyboard backlight. A twitch means power rails come up. The fault is later in the sequence.
  5. Ask about history. Liquid, a drop on the jack, a previous repair, "it happened after the update". Each points the bench at a different rail.

What it usually turns out to be

None of those are found by swapping parts. They are found by measuring the power path in order, which is what diagnosis at this bench is.

What it costs, and what to send

Diagnosis is £35 + VAT, waived when the repair goes ahead; the repair lands in the fixed £120 + VAT laptop logic board repair (post both ways and 12-month warranty included) or £180 + VAT in the priority slot. If it turns out to be bigger than the fixed price covers, a revised quote comes to your portal before any paid work. Send the complete machine with its charger if the ticket asks; the bench tests on the adapter the customer actually uses.

No-power questions

Is a gaming laptop with no power always dead?

Rarely. The DC jack, charging circuit, power rails and startup logic are all repairable faults. The diagnosis separates them before anything paid happens.

Can a shorted GPU power stage keep the whole laptop down?

Yes, and it is one of the more repairable 'dead GPU' situations there is once it is measured properly.

What does it cost, and what should I send?

£120 + VAT fixed for the repair where the work fits (post both ways and 12-month warranty included) £180 + VAT in the priority slot, diagnosis £35 waived on repair. Send the complete machine and, where possible, the adapter the customer actually uses.
