ThinkPad board repair
ThinkPads are built to survive offices. Spill channels, reinforced frames, years of dock life. The boards inside them still fail like boards everywhere: charging circuits, port and dock damage, liquid that beat the channels, and the occasional power-rail fault. What ThinkPads add to the data conversation is generous: most T and X machines carry removable storage, which makes the customer's data an easier story than on soldered-storage rivals.

What we fix on ThinkPad boards
- No power: charging circuits, USB-C/barrel jacks and rail faults
- Not charging, including machines that behave on dock power but not on the adapter
- Port and dock-connector damage: replaced and their pads rebuilt
- Liquid damage: the spill channels help, they do not make boards waterproof
- Boot and firmware faults: powered but no post
- Previous-repair damage from earlier bench visits
The durable-machine trap
There is one failure mode worth flagging on business machines: they stay in service long past the warranties of flimsier laptops, so faults compound. A tired battery feeding a marginal charging circuit, or old corrosion finally reaching a rail. A diagnosis separates the original fault from the accumulated ones, and the revised-quote flow means nothing bigger is ever a surprise.
What to check before you post it
The charging triage covers most arrivals; the boot-loop sort handles the machines that power but will not post; and for liquid history, stop power-cycling and treat it like the first-hour job it was not given.
ThinkPad questions
Which ThinkPads do you take?
The business range (T, X, P and E series) at the same fixed price as everything else on the bench.
The spill channels saved it. Why is the board still wet?
Spill channels route liquid away from the keyboard, not out of the machine. Residue that reaches the board through vents and ports keeps corroding even when the laptop works. A clean-up now is the cheap version.
Is the data story easier on ThinkPads?
Usually yes. Most T and X machines carry removable storage, so the drive often reads independently of the board, subject to the usual BitLocker caveats.
How much does the repair cost?
£120 + VAT fixed (post both ways and a 12-month warranty included) or £180 + VAT in the priority slot. Diagnosis is £35 + VAT and is waived when the repair goes ahead.
