Microsoft Surface board repair
Surfaces are the least repairable mainstream laptops: glued shut, soldered everywhere, batteries bonded to the chassis and pressing on the board. That design has one quiet consequence for repair shops, when a Surface stops, board-level work is not the premium option, it is the only option short of Microsoft's replacement programme. This bench does exactly that work, at the same fixed price as everything else.

What we fix on Surface boards
- No power and no charge: charging circuits and rail faults
- Charging and port faults: Surface Connect and USB-C paths both
- Liquid damage: spills reach dense, shield-covered board areas; cleaning is delicate work
- No image and no backlight: board-side faults behind the display assembly
- Storage-path faults: soldered storage means the board is the data path, full stop
- Previous-repair damage, including machines opened by hand where a heat mat was required
Data on a dead Surface
Soldered storage plus encrypted Windows makes this the strictest version of the dead-laptop data playbook: if the BitLocker key exists and the board can be repaired, the data comes back the honest way. The machine boots and gets backed up. If the key does not exist, be the shop that says so early; BitLocker keys, explained is the conversation to have before anything is sent.
What to check before you post it
The charging triage and the boot sort cover most Surface arrivals; the rest is a diagnosis conversation, and on these machines, a diagnosis is worth more than on any other laptop, because replacement options are so thin.
Surface questions
Why is a Surface repair worth it?
Because replacement options are thin: these are soldered, glued machines where board-level work is the only route short of Microsoft's replacement programme. Here at a fixed £120 + VAT with a 12-month warranty.
Can a Surface be opened without damaging it?
They are glued shut and need heat and patience. Normal work at this bench, and it is exactly why machines that were hand-opened elsewhere need the diagnosis most.
What about data on a dead Surface?
Soldered storage plus encrypted Windows makes this the strict version of the playbook: the BitLocker key matters, and repairing the board so the machine boots is the recovery route. Have the key conversation before posting.
How much does the repair cost?
£120 + VAT fixed (post both ways and a 12-month warranty included) or £180 + VAT in the priority slot. Diagnosis is £35 + VAT and is waived when the repair goes ahead.
