Apple Silicon MacBooks: what board repair looks like
M-series MacBooks are the most integrated laptops ever built: the processor, memory and storage are one package soldered to the board, encrypted by hardware design. There is no swapping parts, which is precisely why component-level board repair is the route that keeps these machines (and their data) alive. This bench takes them from UK repair shops every week.

What we fix on Apple Silicon boards
- No power after a spill: corrosion cleaned, shorted rails found and repaired
- Charging and port faults: USB-C connectors and the power-delivery circuitry behind them
- Liquid damage under the shields, where condensation hides
- No image and no backlight: the board side of a black screen
- Storage-path faults: the board is the storage, so the fault is board work
- Damage from a previous repair: the machine that has already been opened once
The data reality, said plainly
Storage on these machines is soldered and encrypted, with keys tied to hardware. That makes board repair the recovery path in most cases: fix the board, the machine boots, the customer backs up. It also means the wrong instinct (repeated hopeful power-ons) can be the thing that ends the recovery. If data matters, read data from a dead laptop before anything else happens to the machine.
What to check before you post it
The standard Mac triage applies: won't turn on, not charging, or after a spill. Ten minutes of checks decides which job you are quoting, and which jobs are worth posting at all.
Apple Silicon questions
Which Apple Silicon machines do you take?
All of them: M-series MacBook Air and Pro in every generation. The complete machine comes in, and it is tested against a real battery, port and display before it goes back.
Can a dead Apple Silicon board be repaired?
Often, yes. Power, charging, liquid and backlight faults are component-level work even on these integrated boards. Where a fault is genuinely beyond repair, the diagnosis says so with photos before any paid work.
What about the data on these machines?
Storage is soldered and encrypted, so the board is the data path. Repairing the board so the machine boots is the recovery route in most cases. The 'data from a dead laptop' guide covers the full playbook.
How much does the repair cost?
£120 + VAT fixed (post both ways and a 12-month warranty included) or £180 + VAT in the priority slot. Diagnosis is £35 + VAT and is waived when the repair goes ahead.
