Gaming laptop shuts down under load: heat or power?

A gaming laptop that dies mid-game is doing one of two very different things: managing heat (graceful shutdown, then it boots normally warm) or losing a power rail (instant black, like the plug was pulled). The two look similar to a customer and are completely different jobs for a bench. This is how shops tell them apart before quoting.

Tell them apart

When it is the board

Persistent shutdowns with a clean thermal path point at the voltage-regulator stages around the GPU and CPU: a marginal stage that holds at idle and collapses under load, or a temperature-sensitive fault on the board. This is measured on the bench under load (the same conditions the customer's game creates) and the failing stage is reworked or replaced at component level. It lands in the fixed £120 + VAT laptop logic board repair where the work fits, post both ways included; bigger reconstructions get a revised quote before anything paid.

What to send, and one warning

Send the complete machine and its adapter. Load faults reproduce on the bench with the right power source, and the wrong adapter is its own red herring. And one honest warning for the customer: continuing to run a machine that cuts under load is how a marginal rail becomes a dead board. Once it is shutting down, that is the moment to stop the stress tests.

Thermal shutdown questions

Does repasting fix shutdown under load?

Sometimes. Rule the thermal path out first. If it persists with clean cooling, it is electrical: power stages measured under load at the bench and reworked at component level.

Instant black vs graceful shutdown. What's the difference?

Graceful shutdown with heat is the system protecting itself; instant black like the plug was pulled is a rail browning out. One is thermal, the other is power. Different jobs, different quotes.

Is it dangerous to keep using it?

Yes. Continuing to run a machine that cuts under load is how a marginal rail becomes a dead board. Once it is shutting down, stop the stress tests.

What does the repair cost?

£120 + VAT where the work fits, post both ways included, with a revised quote for anything bigger; £180 + VAT in the priority slot. Diagnosis is £35 + VAT, waived when the repair goes ahead.
